SOMETIMES THE 5 YR OLD THAT SPENDS HALF HIS LIFE UPSIDE DOWN ON THE COUCH KNOWS MORE THAN ME

I could never be a nurse.

Blood and guts do not bother me. In fact, I have a morbid curiosity about the body and all of its parts. What I don't do well with is when an accident happens....I panic.

Izzy cut off the top part of his finger today with a pair of Fiskars. Not a huge cut, but enough skin layers were missing that it wouldn't stop bleeding. Between Izzy screaming and me trying to find out how bad the cut was....we were going nowhere fast.

Through Izzy's flood of tears he suddenly shouted,
"MOM! I WANT TO KNOW ALL ABOUT MEXICAN COOKING! GRAB THE COOKBOOK."

?

I proceeded to tell Izzy we had to keep pressure on the wound to stop the blood.

Izzy said, "Mom. I'm about to throw up from all of this blood. I need you to keep my mind off of the pain. Please read to me about Mexican cooking. I'll keep pressing the bandage to my cut if you will read to me."

So he and I sat and read the finer art of using a mortar and pestle while preparing Roasted Poblano Guacamole and why you use raw fish when "cooking" Ceviche.

And when Izzy's finger still didn't stop bleeding, Izzy said:

"Call Dad. He always knows what to do."

After a panicked call to Bubby, this is what Bubby said.
"Keep his finger up and above his heart."

"Oh." I said. And then I think I heard something like "dumbass" on the other end of the line. But I'm not sure...I was too distracted to notice.

Izzy is okay now and I have learned a valuable lesson. Distract the person that's hurt. See? Some of our best lessons come from children!

And apparently, help distract the person who's helping the injured through distraction :)

He's so logical, its scary!

I'm sure if it happened, Bubby was only saying out loud what you were muttering in your head.

Mama Wheaton - Since my husband is hispanic and two of our adopted children our Hispanic....we try to incorporate Mexican cooking on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it's just bean, rice and tortillas though!
